Chris will be a featured artist in the up coming What Makes a City? gallery showing Oct. 1-Nov. 30 at Providence Marionwood in Issaquah. It’s an expansion of the exhibit that ended August 29th in the artEast studio at upfront Gallery, in Issaquah.

He will also be a participating in the fourth annual Sammamish Art Fair Oct. 9-10 at Sammamish City Hall. The fair runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m. each day and offers a variety of art from 33 Eastside artists. The event also includes plenty of family and children’s activities. Find out more and browse the artist links at the art fair website.

Four of Chris’s black-and-white photographs from his time shooting in downtown San Jose, Costa Rica will be featured, along with numerous other local artists of varying media.

The work in this gallery showing seeks to address the question, WHAT MAKES A CITY?

The question of what makes a city is an ongoing discussion throughout the growing communities of the Puget Sound region. This question can apply to the self-definition process and discussion that any vibrant community will engage in regularly.

For this show, juried artists create a work that presents their answer to the question of “what makes a city?” They were encouraged to think broadly, so that their work would resonate with viewers from any community. The work may be abstract or representational and does not need to be location-specific.

While working for a newspaper in San Jose, Costa Rica in 2007, I spent plenty of time walking the streets in the city. I got some interesting perspectives one day, while walking back from an assignment.

What do you think about these? Please lend your thoughts. It’s always interesting to get some fresh eyes on my work.

Ottawa at Sunset

It’s fun to experiment with styles and filters. I was satisfied with my original exposure and composition for this image — I used a tripod to expose longer and really let the sensor soak in the warm tones of the building at sunset. But I wanted to try something new, so I added some grain to see how retro I could make it.

I don’t shoot with a tripod much, so when I do have it handy, it’s fun to stop and compose a nice shot like this, even if it takes a few more minutes to get home from the grocery store. This is shot from a store parking lot in Ottawa, Kansas. The peach-colored rays of light reaching into the dark blue sky only lasted for a minute or two, so I had to work fast.

Located just a block off of the main drag through Ottawa, Kansas, the First Baptist Church building sticks out for its dynamic architecture.

Although Ottawa, Kansas is a small town of only about 12,000 residents, it has its fair share of historic landmarks, like the Franklin County Courthouse and the Baptist church.

According to a couple of local residents, the church underwent a million-dollar renovation but maintains its original stone architecture.

While in Kansas, I visited the Louisburg Cider Mill. There, they bottle exquisitely fresh apple cider and a variety of root beer and cream sodas. They even make cider-flavored cake donuts.
